Freedom in God’s Design For Sex

The sign over the famous Auschwitz death camp proudly proclaimed that work makes you free. Anyone can look back through time at the evidence and see very clearly that this was rank deception. The labor performed under the most cruel means in this institution had the intended end of a horrific death. By no means would any sensible person call this freedom. Nearly all of the enslaved people were worked to their own demise. Yet in every lie of Satan there is a golden thread of truth woven in the fabric. If the lies were blatantly obvious we would not be so easily deceived.

1 Timothy 2:14–15: “And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.”

Although that system of work was an evil and oppressive affront to our Creator, work in itself can make free when performed in its proper context. Work is a blessing, not a curse. Adam was given work in the Garden before the Fall and it was called good by God. This has not changed. Work is a way that we express that we are made in the image of God. Our skills and creative power are tools and gifts from our Creator God and they are to be utilized to glorify and be an example of Him. It is in this manner when work is performed there is freedom. Living according to the design of God and for our intended purpose is not to be burdensome or oppressive ending in destruction. His design and wisdom in assigning work is always good.

1 Corinthians 15:58: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

In much the same tactic of enemy the culture promotes things as freedom that are intended by it for our destruction. This is the inverse of God’s order. Sex is one of these works, assigned by God with a purpose to glorify Him that the world has stolen, created a forgery, and attempted to return to us in its place. The culture tells us that sex will make us free. This is not an outright lie. It is a lie with a golden thread of truth woven in. If we do not seek God and His Word to know what His design is for this good work and how its intent is freeing then we will be deceived by anything that pleases self.

Genesis 1:27–28: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

God has given us sex as a blessing. We are to use it to bless Him. We are to use this tool that He has given us as a gift in obedience to Him. When we know the intended purpose and participate in using this gift it has the dual purpose of sanctifying us and glorifying God. In the wrong context sex will destroy us. Scripture tells us that that sex used wrongfully is the one sin that is done against even our own body.

The idolatry and pragmatism of self-rule does not set us free. It enslaves us to our own lusts and desires while hanging a banner over it which pridefully proclaims that sex makes free. It tyrannically demands to be fueled by works that are fruitless. It is a peaceless, unending marathon that will gleefully leave us dead in sin by worship of self.

We doubt the sufficiency of God when we participate in attacking His design by unbelief. We discard Him along with His order for our lives. Making ourselves wiser than God, we pursue our own gratification apart from Him. If we could see this image of god that we make by imaging Him improperly and blasphemously it would be a hideous monster. In doing this we willfully embrace self and not Him. If we put our trust, hope, or happiness in the blessings of God without obedience to Him, we have viewed Him wrongly. It displays a low, erroneous view of our Creator. When we are primarily focused on self and devoting our lives to our own satisfaction, we have made an idol.

Isaiah 45:18: For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, He created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else.

God’s intent for sex is to be performed in marriage. It is for one man—the head—and one woman—the helper—and the intended purpose is the fruitfulness of expanding the borders of His kingdom by creating godly image bearers. It is a beautiful picture of the intimacy and love that Christ has for His Bride. It is intended to be beautiful and joyful. It is a work that we are given to do and it is not to be a chore or a drudgery. In fact, we are cautioned to only abstain from one another for an agreed time of prayer. Christ and His Bride are fruitful, bringing forth many to be called children of God. His marriage union is one of fidelity and faithfulness.

Deuteronomy 6:4–7: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Pragmatism will cause us to seek methods other than God’s prescribed methods because they seem to work in our own estimation. This is disobedience that displays that we doubt God. Pride tells us that we can do things our way; this is the mantra of the culture. We are first to know what God commandswith the understanding that He has given us everything pertaining to life and godliness.

His Word is not archaic and unable to be applicable today in this culture. His Word still stands and it is timely. It is still true. It still applies perfectly to every situation and temptation known to man, regardless of what the culture says. All of our labors are to be working towards His purpose, including sex. Agree with Him about who He is and who He says He is and live to His glory.
