
Quarantine Series Frugal Meals: Substitutions
Sometime we need that one ingredient and rather than run to the store, which right now, is kind of hard without Sometimes we just don’t have that one real planning.
So we need to find a substitute sometime, so we can continue with our baking or cooking for our families. I hope these are helpful to you they sure have been to me. As sister sent me over the substitution on the baking powder, and I am embarrassed I didn’t know that one (Thank you, Heather) But it did give me the idea for this blog. Enjoy!!
Baking Powder: ¼ tsp baking soda + ½ tsp Cream of Tartar
Lemon juice: ½ tsp vinegar
1 oz Chocolate: 4 Tbsp Cocoa + 1 Tbsp Butter
Cocoa: 1 oz unsweetened chocolate
Cream of Tartar: 2 tsp Lemon juice
Cake flour: 1 C All Purpose flour – minus 2 Tbsp.
Unsalted butter: shortening
Sweetened Condensed Milk: ¾ C white sugar mixed with ½ C water and 1 1/8 C Dry powdered milk. Bring to boil , stirring frequently.Until thickened . About 15-20 min.
Vegetable oil: 1 Cup Applesauce
Vinegar: 1 tsp lemon juice or 2 tsps white wine
White wine: chicken broth
Red wine: beef broth
Yogurt. Sour Cream or buttermilk
Brown sugar: 1 C white sugar or 1 ¼ C Confectioners sugar
Yogurt: ¾ C Butter milk or 1/3 C butter
Soy Sauce: ¼ C Worcheshire sauce + 2 Tbsp water
Buttermilk: Milk with 2 tsp vinegar (let sour 5 min)
Beer: Chicken broth
1 C Butter: 1 C shortening + tsp salt
Corn Syrup: Honey
Cream: 1/3 C Butter (heavy) or 3 tbsp butter (light)
Egg: Banana + ½ teaspoon baking powder
Mayonnaise: Yogurt or sour cream
Milk: Any plant “milk” or evaporated or dry milk per instructions.
Onion: shallots, minced dry onions
Raisins: Cranberries, dried blueberries
Rice: Bulgar or quinoa
Vegetable Oil: Lard

Also I would add
Substitution for 1 cup brown sugar.
Mix 1 cup white sugar with 1 tsp molasses until combined.
