Pietistic Fatalism: Where’s the Light, Where’s the Salt?

Our godless culture is what an Americanized Christianity looks like. America is reaping godlessness from a silent church, not from a pagan country. On the contrary, according to statistics America is a “Christian country”. Many churches dotting the mass landscape of this great country. And we gasp and say, “how could our society reach such depths of depravity, then”? We then let our heads drop, as they should, and we must confess that while there is many “professing churches and Christians” there is very little salt, and light left in this land. We have made a god of our profession of Faith and our works, leaning on our own understanding and forsaking what Gods Word actually says. We have sought to live peaceably with the evil around us.

The debauchery and depravity that is seemingly running our land, is not because the majority of people are supporting it. No, not at all. On the contrary, the agendas and vile sins that are being legislated and openly celebrated have come about because of a very small number of determined, god hating, focused individuals that have banded together. Why is this tolerated in this land when there are so many Christians? Where is the Salt? Where is the Light? Is it down at the Christian Rock Concert enjoying the music? Is it at the church coffee shop, having a Latte? Or could it be in the thousands of pulpits that ignore the apathy for our neighbors?

I heartily agree with a Pastor I admire, a great deal. He coined the first term, I would like to deal with, and I had never thought of it in such terms. He sees it as a type of fatalism in the church. A fatalism that actually wants the world to collapse, so they do nothing. They stay within their Christian bubbles, protected from the wicked outside world. They turn out their light and throw away their salt. And in this “Christian” fatalism is at its core, cruelty and apathy. It sees a lost and dying world and instead of running into that lost and dying world with the Gospel of grace, or going to the magistrates to plead with them with what God has called them to, they stay in their buildings. They stay silent. They watch the world around us crumble. Pietistic fatalism is beyond a hyper-Calvinism. It’s a Christianized fatalism.

Going even deeper I would add “pietistic” to the fatalism. And what this pietistic fatalism within the church looks like, is it looks at the Amish and judges them, but they do the very same thing. Except we have managed to be isolationists right in the midst of it all. We, unlike the Amish, look like the world, we don’t challenge the ungodly doctrines, but we live in peace amongst a lost and dying world. Which is not love, but a self-righteousness that does not seek to rescue their neighbor with the good news. Where is the salt? Where is the Light?

I cannot hardly read the news anymore. It is too much to even bare to look at. It is all darkness and no light. This was some of that dark news about 7 months ago that I read that there is a Pastor in Shasta, California that was under this same conviction and his community going deeper in depravity. He posted on the church Marquis that Bruce Jenner is a man and homosexuality is a sin. In most Christian circles, well, biblical Christian circles, that statement will qualify as absolute truth. And can you guess what happened to the Presbyterian Pastor? They fired him. Homosexuals came to the church and protested, and he was fired. This church has lost its Light and thrown away its salt. Truth is for inside of the building only. Truth must not be proclaimed outside the building, unless of course, it is in another country. Preferably one that is accepting of the “gospel”. This Pastor was called to another Church, with his family. We have talked to him and he would like to start a Bible college to raise up bi vocational Pastors. He sees that a time is coming where Pastors will have to choose between their families getting fed and the Truth. If Pastors are prepared and not beholden to boards but to God, they are more likely not to compromise.

We can go back to the Book of Martyrs starting with Stephen, and we find that this pietistic fatalism did not exist in the true church. But in contrast the love of neighbor and urgency to go to those hard areas they knew they would be rejected and proclaim a gospel that has the power to save. That every moment they would be in danger of their very lives, and they proclaimed and exhorted to those in the marketplace, synagogue and highways. But not now, not here in America, we instead cower (not all, but most) in our buildings, prayer meetings and potlucks. And no, there are nothing wrong about any of those things, but can we look at them in the context of Rome (America) is literally burning. Wickedness is reigning and we still hear this mantra, this from Wikipedia, in this case: “Protestantism in the United StatesProtestantism is the largest grouping of Christians in the United States with its combined denominations collectively accounting for about half the country’s population or 150 million people.” You see, we are not reaping for being a “Christian nation” We are reaping that which we have sowed. We have turned out our Light and thrown away our salt? What are we called to do?

Pietistic fatalism is a Christianity without orthopraxy. We learn and learn and learn. But to put our Christianity to work in every area of our lives, it brings the ire up of those that like to keep the secular and sacred and never the two shall meet. It is a Christianity that holds correct doctrine but does not hold to putting that doctrine to action. Their love is for those like them, not for those that look like they once did. Sinners in the depths of sin. How will they hear if no one preaches? How will they preach except if they are sent?Church is not evangelism, it is fellowship of the Saints. Pietistic fatalism rejects God’s commands to be Salt and Light in a dying world.

Can’t tell you how many times folks have been told “we just need to preach the gospel” when it comes to ministering to those that murder preborn babies. But what qualifies as the “gospel”? We could venture that on missionary trips it is a much different standard used, such as “building houses, giving water to the community or babysitting for missionaries” Those things and many others are exempt from the “just preach the gospel.” Why is that? Why is it admirable to build a house in Guatemala, but shameful to plead with a mother not to murder her baby? Why? It’s because the world has had far more affect on the church than the other way around. That being “pro life” is enough. Which means regulating murder is fine, don’t rock the boat.

In America, if you go to the streets or the abortion mill to share gospel and plead with mamas not to murder their babies and enviably you will have Christians that will go out of their way to stop and tell you things like “you are doing it wrong” ” Jesus never did politics” “Abortion is politics” “All babies go to heaven, anyway” “Don’t you know those women are in a hard situation”? Those are only a few examples. Just writing them down makes me cry, I just can’t process those things. Those statements are contrary to what we learn in Scripture. American Christianity seeks to be esteemed by the world. We are in big trouble here in America. We will soon feel the hammer of persecution for our faith and we will not be able to ride the fence of Luke warmness.

Christians, we have turned out our light and thrown away our salt, we have settled into a comfortable Christianity that as Frances Schaeffer says “we have made personal peace and affluence a god”,  He was stating that people will become so willing to live free of controversy or struggle or inconvenience that we will give up certain convictions. As Christians in a wicked world expect our lives to be inconvenienced at many points, but we do not. We must repent of our very desire for personal peace and affluence, that we have grown apathetic and fearful.

What does this all have to do with being a Christian Wife? Well, everything. The darker it gets, and the quieter the prophetic voice of God’s Word gets, the less tolerable the world will be of our God given roles, of Christians at all. Of traditional biblical marriage. As we see already in the church, divorces are up. Folks are leaving their spouses, and children. Those marriages that you thought could not fail, have failed and are rejecting Christ. The line between the world and the church has been so blurred that God’s Word is not held as absolute truth but rather adapted and misinterpreted to accommodate all manner of ungodly doctrines.

Take a look at the news, it is dark. There is not Light, just darkness. But think back 10 years ago, and take a look again at today’s news, the wicked agenda of the evil one is marching on with little to no resistance from God’s people. Where is our Salt? Where is our Light?

Things to think about:

  1. How can we move away from Americanized Christianity that has lost its salt and light?
  2. Pietistic Fatalism is a fearful and self-righteous stance for a Christian.
  3. America has not had real persecution. But it always comes when the Church has been silenced in the Culture. And in our desire for personal peace and affluence we lull ourselves into believing that if we stay quiet, they will leave us alone.

  1. I learned to drive in a fast paced area full of intelligent people, where you had to drive well, or there would be accidents and traffic jams. After university I moved out to a cow-town where most people drive poorly, ignorantly, and carelessly. I said to myself, I’ll just drive so well that everybody here will see my fine driving and want to change their ways. Well, over thirty years later, I don’t think they drive any better, as a result of my fine example, and what little better they do drive seems to be entirely the result of increasing police enforcement of the traffic laws.

I think that is a silly analogy to how many people claim to believe in practicing “lifestyle evangelism”, instead of directly confronting obvious errors with God’s requirements for humankind.

Spot on!! Those that hate God confront the truth with lies and we cower. It’s long overdue for Christians to stop running and stand. And stay standing equipped with what God has said.
